Hi Guys

My 383 R/T 71 chally needs a carb change, as I believe the wrong one might be on. It purrs great and responds extremely well to throttle movement, and burns rubber well. But as the rpm starts getting over 3000, it tends to choke, so to speak, and the pull is not there anymore.
Since I have owned this car, I have not touched it yet and my mechanic believes it may have a small carb.
That being the case, what carb should I get for it (obviously after checking everything that might lead to such a problem)?
What should there be as an original equipment, and is there a better carb to fit to it than what originally came on such a car?

Thanks

What type of carb is on there now. If its a carter AVS, the tune might be in the rear secondaries. The AVS can be adjusted with the turning of a few screws. Let us know what type of carb it is. A too small cfm carb would not cause this type of problem. A carb out of tune or a distributor might be the problem. I think that edelbrock makes an excellent carb for an almost as stock replacement. Demon carbs are very tuneable, as well as Holley. If the engine is stock or mildly modded I think you might want to stay with an Edelbrock replacement. They were built just like the old Carters. Just match up the cfm. 650 cfm I think for a 383.

I have a '71 Superbee with a 383. When i got the car it had a Holley 4bbl, vaccum secondaries. It was a 600cfm. It worked well in stock form. I'm not 100 % on the originality, however i was advised by a couple knowledgeable Mopar owners that many '71 383s came with Holley 4bbls. You may want to closely examine the spark plugs to see if it is running too lean. if the engine is stock, more than 700cfm is too much carb for your engine. 600-650 sounds about right.

Get a new or rebuilt Edelbrock from Summit Racing.

They are tuned better for Mopars and Summit has the best prices. (They should be paying me for my endorsements.)

You can screw around forever with the old carb and still have problems. Drop $200 or so on the new Eddy and you'll be happy.

Smaller is better if you don't have a cam.
