Hello...

I have the oppurtunity to purchase a complete 440 engine. The engine is a 1968 model year. The engine is complete with carb- but doesn't include the tranny. It was running when it was pulled. No work has been done on it as far as mods are concerned. I have a challenger with it's original numbers matching small block, but we were thinking of acquiring this for possibly my challenger or to drop into a restore project my husband would like to do for drag racing. The question I have..how much should I expect to pay? thank you VERY much for any information!

What kind of info are looking for? How much you should pay for the engine itself? How much to rebuild it(stock or race)?

Rule of thumb on core engines is $1.00 for every cubic inch. $440.00 dollars would not be bad for a good core. $1500.00 for a nice rebuild if you can do the pulling and setting of the motor yourself. Also depends if you need pistons and an overbore. But if you buy a new rebuild kit that comes with all the gaskets, bearings and seals, cam kit and new water pump, then its cheaper. The amount of machine work will be a factor. Over bore and you need new pistons. But if the motor goes back standard with just a hone then it is less expensive. you will have to open the motor up and see what you have. Let us know what you decide and if we can help. PS the 68 motor is pretty good, forged crank, ect.

i would say, look to pay anywhere between 500 and 700 depending on what is included, such as pulleys,
accesories like p/s pump and brackets, etc.

I agree with Lear.

Make it a family project.

The 906 heads on that '68 will make some good power.

If it was running and driving and you can trust the person you got ot from your going to be in good shape.

292 cam, headers, intake and carb and give it a whirl. The worst that can happen is you pull it again next year and by then, you'll want to do something more anyway.
